I feel a lot happier when I can practice in a sequence than just doing interstitial yoga. The flow of my, hmm, what do we call it, well-being, maybe, goes along with the asanas. I start by going inward, either with the invocation to Patanjali, or ten Oms, or three Oms, or just silence. Then… Continue reading Better

Not a real practice
Today I didn't get on the mat. Stuff kept happening. A more disciplined person might have brushed the stuff aside. However, I did do quite a bit of interstitial yoga. At writing group, while we did our obligatory blabbing, I did Trikonasana (triangle), Parsvottanasana (Intense side stretch), and Virabhadrasana II (warrior). Ditto for hanging around… Continue reading Not a real practice
Good day
I almost didn't make it onto the mat today. I got up with all good intentions, and put on my yoga clothes right away. Then I ate breakfast. Then I picked beets, peas, beans, and lettuce out of the garden. Then I washed all the veg. Then I talked on the phone to two out… Continue reading Good day
Good things about home practice
This list doesn't count the really obvious benefits, like deepening your practice. You can practice in your pajamas, or naked if you really want to. Say you're in down dog and your shirt is falling in your face. You can just take it off. You can find a mirror or other reflective surface so you… Continue reading Good things about home practice
Ardha Chandrasana (half moon)
Recently at home I've been able to do standing poses again, because my feet, ankles, and knees are stable once more. (Goody!) It's mostly been Trikonasana (triangle) and Uttitha Parsvakonasana (extended side angle). Yesterday in class we did Ardha Chandrasana (half moon). I just plain loved it. It's so far the only pose I can… Continue reading Ardha Chandrasana (half moon)
Obstacles, pushed aside
Yesterday I was quite chuffed that I had a good practice. I did a blend of the Iyengar sciatica sequence from the big (and I believe somewhat inaccurate in its first edition) Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health by B.K.S. Iyengar and Sam Dworkis's Recovery Yoga. I started after I had gone for a walk… Continue reading Obstacles, pushed aside
Back to class
Today was the first day of the Ageless Yoga class for the new session. In the weeks between sessions I developed sciatica. I've had it before, so I know now what helps. Nonetheless, it's very frustrating to suddenly have one hamstring shrink up to a little piece of wire. Sharp wire. I almost didn't go… Continue reading Back to class
Yoga practice and physical therapy
I'm getting a whole bunch of physical therapy right now, and I'm kinda thrilled to see how helpful my yoga practice is with some of the exercises. My balance is quite good even though my feet and ankles are currently wonked out, and it's due in large part to the efforts I've made over the… Continue reading Yoga practice and physical therapy
Breathing again
This is just a quick post to say how much I am loving reading Recovery Yoga by Sam Dworkis. It's making me pay attention to breathing again. Why I have to be hit over the head with this again and again I don't know. Anyway, it's a great book, and I think I'll have to… Continue reading Breathing again
