poses

Standing poses, yes!

Since I had foot surgery in November all my yoga has been on the floor, sitting or lying down. I did go to the YCL New Year’s Day class, and found that I just wasn’t quite ready for standing poses (ow, ow ow!).

Today I a) had time and b) realized I could do it. I didn’t do much: Tadasana (well, yeah, I HAVE been doing that one), Trikonasana (triangle pose), Ardha Chandrasana (half moon pose), Uttanasana (standing forward bend), and Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog).

The very wonderful thing about standing poses is that you get to extend wayyyyy out in ways you don’t while on the floor, no matter how hard you try. Having your whole body out in space is so expansive and energizing! I did Trikonasana and Ardha Chandrasana against the wall, because one of the outcomes of not doing standing poses is that you forget how to balance. Still, I was just winging out all over the place.

Recently I watched a yoga anatomy video by Paul Grilley.  He talked about how ultimately we’re all going to be bent over, and so we should stretch out to our limits while we can.  I’m paraphrasing, of course.  I thought of that this morning while I had my arm sticking up in the air and my leg shooting out behind me and my whole spine extending out.  Yes, yes, yes!
