Intentions tend to go astray, don’t they? I always intend to practice every day, but I don’t. I’m forgiving myself for that.
I’m going to the beach for two weeks, starting next Sunday. Here’s my plan:
- I’m taking my travel mat, which will fold up in my suitcase. I wish I could roll it, but there’s not room. That will make practicing easier. I don’t like practicing on carpet or on sticky linoleum, and that can become an excuse for not practicing.
- I’m taking one strap, my best prop. My main, try-to-do-every-day pose is Supta Padangusthasana, and I will probably never be able to reach my foot without my strap.
- I can use sofa throw pillows for something to sit on in Virasana (Hero’s Pose), and surely I can find a good block substitute. If not, there are plenty of things I can do without a block.
- No props needed for pranayama.
- Practice every day, or at least have that intention.
If I don’t follow through, that’s OK, but wouldn’t it be nice if I were able to do this?
PLUS! The healing power of the salt water! The jumping up and down in the waves, breathing hard and laughing! The relaxation of reading on the deck at the end of the day. Ahhhh. All yoga.
That is a good props list, especially if you’re trying to reduce dramatically the volume of your luggage. I took something similar to Colorado last summer, but with the addition of one foam block–bulky, but light–which I used in every practice. Speaking of salt water, Todd told me last night that the Lawrence Athletic Club has stopped using chlorine in their pool and has switched to salt!
